From day one of our relationship, I have known about Alex’s other person. When we got married I knew I was not just getting sweet innocent Alex, I was also getting his counterpart:
I’m pretty sure I first met Travis when he was passed out on Alex’s couch [1pm] and he was referenced as “the prince.” I’m also pretty sure Travis was not excited when he realized “Alex time” was limited because of me [and he definitely didn’t like my views of Phish]. But obviously things changed and I began to love Travis… not because of his quick wit and goofy deposition, but because I realized he is such a large part of who Alex is as a person.
So as the story goes, our “prince” became a helicopter pilot for the Navy and married his long-time love Miranda [who is a brilliant photographer, I could look at her work all day]. They were deployed to Japan and we all sleep a little safer “under the blanket of freedom” Travis provides our country.
Then shit hit the fan.
Alex’s dad became sick and life as we knew it was [is] forever different. There is only so much you can say to someone when something like this is happening. I feel like sometimes I’ve said everything I can think of, and other times feel like I’m not saying enough.
In times like these you remember why you picked your friends. It wasn’t really about their hacky sack ability in the eighth grade, it was about their hearts and who they become when shit gets sucky.. and all of our friends have become something amazing for us.
So without saying very much, Travis and Mandy sent the sweetest, most thoughtful care package from Japan! Before we even opened it we both started crying. The package had goodies for everyone in the family and the best part was the hand written note from Mandy: “We know no words or gifts can make any of this easier, but we wanted to hopefully put a smile on your face.” Mission accomplished.
Keller and Bo love their adorable Japanese outfits [I’m not exactly sure what these are called, but Keller called them “ninja outfits” so I’m running with that].
So thank you again Travis for being Alex’s person and being able to talk to him when I’ve run out of words. Thank you Mandy for being so thoughtful and always checking in on us from the other side of the world. You guys [and all of our friends] have made these dark days a bit brighter.
ありがとう[Google said this was “thank you” in Japanese and Google knows everything sooo…]
Sidenote: There are millions of pictures I could have chose, but I picked our wedding pictures because Scott looks strong, handsome, and proud…just like I know him to be. These pictures make me happy .
